We’re excited to welcome all of our new and returning students after summer, and we have got a tremendous year planned!
Classes for the 2015/16 school year begin on August 24th. We will be using our current facilities on Fordham Blvd. and Christopher Rd. for the first few weeks while construction is completed on our new Franklin Street location. Please pardon our boxes as we begin packing up!
Be sure to pick up a copy of your Student Handbook from your teacher on your first day of class. There is a lot of new and updated information (including important dates) that will be useful to you in planning your year.
Our September move to Franklin Square isn’t the only big news. We’re making some big improvements to our regular music education program and are offering a host of new services.
- “Studio Classes” are now “Group Lessons.” More physical space means we can offer many more options to students for this part of our program. Performance based classes (i.e. studio classes) are still available, but students also have the choice to improve specific skills, expand general music knowledge, and engage socially with their peer musicians. Group lessons are still held 4 times a year and students will be in the same lesson group for 2015/16. New options include Music Reading the Easy Way, Spotlight on Musical Styles, Singer/Songwriting, Jam Sessions, Vocal Adventures, Acting, Let’s Play With Music (learning about music through play for students age 9 and under) Club CHSMA (an enjoyable and social evening of music for students age 21 and over). Detailed information about group lessons, schedules, and how to sign up are in your Student Handbook.
- Recitals will now take place over two weekends. We had some very busy recital weekends last year (14 of them packed into 3 days!). This year, we’re holding recitals over two weekends to give us a little more breathing room. This also means all recitals will occur on either a Saturday or Sunday! The dates are already set and can be found in your Student Handbook. More detailed information (including recital time) will be available approximately 2 months before the performance.
- We’re offering adaptive music lessons with a board certified music therapist. Adaptive music lessons offer a creative and individualized approach of learning piano, voice, and other instruments for the student that may have special needs or has struggled to learn music in the more traditional manner. They are tailored to the needs of the student to reach musical and non-musical goals. We are very excited to offer the benefits of music and music education to more of our community!
- We are launching our Actor Training program! For years we have been known for our expertise in teaching musical theater singing. We’re proud to announce our new program for acting students that provides the same level of professional instruction – and highly qualified instructors – that we offer to our music students. This fall we’re offering Authentic Acting for Musical Theater, Kids Acting 101, as well as private coaching.
There is more! Look out for your monthly newsletter, read our bulletin boards, and take a look at our Calendar of Events on this website for more information. It’s going to be an incredible journey this year. We’re so glad to have you join us!
