DIRECTED BY MELISSA S. CRAIB DOMBROWSKI
Due to the current global pandemic, the schedule for our SMTI will be changing. We are currently trying to move our performances to the week of October 12 – 19 and we will update everyone when this plan is final!
We sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
Set sail with this classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in musical theatre history. A fresh take on one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas, this updated version of The Pirates of Penzance took New York by storm when it premiered in Central Park in 1980, leading to a subsequent smash-hit Broadway run.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s hilarious, hopeful farce follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates’ way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel. Frederic’s melodious tones win over the heart of Major-General Stanley’s songbird daughter, Mabel, but when the Pirate King discovers that General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an “ingenious paradox” may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of “The very model of a modern Major-General.”
ABOUT THE SUMMER MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE:
The SMTI is a fully-produced musical directed by seasoned theater and music professionals and presented in a local venue with full production values for a public audience. Prior to starting rehearsals, students take part in a combination of classes exploring the musical’s subject matter and form, it’s music period and style, and other related theatrical skills. They are also encouraged to shadow our professional directors and crew to gain experience with set construction, lighting, sound, props, costuming and more.
If you would like to join us for private lessons, please request a consultation.
ABOUT BROADWAY IN CONCERT:
The BIC performance class features a popular musical performed in a concert version with emphasis on the music and acting. This allows for students to learn the music and emotional content of a complete role and show without the time commitment needed for a full production. Rehearsals are held on four consecutive Sundays, with a dress rehearsal and two performances held the fifth weekend. The leading roles are double cast, providing more students with the opportunity to learn and perform, and final performances are open to the public.
Our Spring BIC class will focus on the show LEGALLY BLONDE, the MUSICAL, an award-winning show based on the popular movie of the same name. The musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Exploding with memorable songs and characters, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!
Teaching the class and directing the performance is CHARLES HIGGINS, one of CHSMA’s Musical Theatre specialists.
